Parking means stopping your vehicle within a parking bay when permitted.

Because it’s the law (CCT parking by-law 2010). - The law says that when a vehicle is parking in a parking bay, the driver of person in charge of the vehicle must immediately pay the parking meter or parking attendant up-front.

Generally within the CBD of Cape Town and other smaller cities within the jurisdiction of the city of Cape Town

Parking is payable at a demarcated parking bay or parking area.

A demarcated parking area will be sign posted indicating 3 instructions: - The prescribed time limit for parking in this area - Prescription to how parking must be effected - The parking tariff applicable to the specific area

You, the motorist must pay the applicable parking tariff up-front to the official designated parking marshal in attendance.

An official parking marshal is identifiable by the following characteristics:

- The motorist must expect to be greeted courteously and promptly by the parking marshal. - The parking marshal will then enquire from the motorist as to his/her parking requirements ( duration of stay, method of payment)

It is the motorists obligation to pay up-front for parking, in doing so you should wait a reasonable time, a few minutes for the parking marshal to attend to you. But if you’re in a real hurry, you must pay upon return to your motor vehicle.

- You may receive a traffic fine from either a Law enforcement officer or a traffic officer. - When the marshal arrives at your vehicle, he/she will input your vehicle details into the handheld unit and print out a 'failure to pay parking meter' receipt.

- Wait a few minutes as the parking marshal may be attending to another motorist. - Should the parking marshal not attend to you, after waiting a few minutes, you should then go about your business. - Upon return to your vehicle you notice a ‘failure to pay meter’ notice on your vehicle (side window or front window). Upon receipt of this notice the marshal should present himself/herself to you and produce a valid invoice which will reflect the time that he/she has captured your vehicle in the meter. You, the motorist, is now responsible for payment.
